A UKIP London assembly member has criticised Sadiq Khan for “singling out Donald Trump” following comments made by the Mayor about the president’s visit.

The President is due to visit the city on July 13 - but David Kurten is questioning how the safety, security and well-being of the President will be protected.

People have vowed to stage a protest ahead of his visit, something which Mr Khan previously defended.

In response to Mr Kurten's questions, during Mayor's Question Time Today, Mr Khan responded: “The safety of any visitor to London, including Trump, is paramount.

“We will be working with the Met Police for the President Trump’s visit to London."

He also reiterated that if there were protests or demonstrations he would make sure they were done in a “peaceful manner”.

Mr Kurten said: “It is great you are taking the safety of the president safely, President Trump is a great person.”

However, he once again pushed the issue that the Mayor’s comments last month could be seen as “encouraging unruly protests”.

Last month the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman visited the UK as part of a state visit and met both Prime Minister Theresa May and members of the royal family.

At the time the Saudi Arabian royal family were visiting, Mr Kurten said: “There is a war going on between Saudi Arabia and Yemen. We think that British bombs are being used by Saudi Arabia in Yemen and children are dying.

“This is far worse than any allegations that anyone has made against Donald Trump and yet Sadiq Khan said nothing about the state visit by the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia.”

Mr Kurten once again criticised the way that the Saudi Prince’s visit was handled at today’s Mayor’s Question time.

He said: “Why do you single out particular heads of state? You keep mentioning President Trump’s visit but have said nothing about Saudi Arabia.”

Mr Khan replied: “We have a special relationship with the US, they are our closest ally and so we have to call them out on things.”
