This week a Conservative candidate for Lewisham was suspended after she compared Islam to Nazism in a tweet.

Karen Sunderland published the tweet in December which read: "The thing is, religion undermines the hard fought for values and tolerances of progressed countries...suppresses free speech and is auto immune from criticism. This is toxic and where the hostility comes from. Religion is totalitarian. Islam has become the new Nazism."

Lewisham Labour mayoral candidate Damien Egan now wants Ms Sunderland to be axed from the party.

With this in mind, News Shopper gathered other infamous tweets which landed people in bother.

- Bromley Councillor tweet controversy on 20mph roads

Ms Sunderland wasn't the only person in politics who faced a Twitter backlash this week.

Conservative councillor and chairman of adult care services, Mary Cooke, tweeted there was no evidence 20mph limits lead to better road safety.

She wrote: “But there is no evidence that 20mph limits help with road safety one jot, in fact the reverse. Ask Manchester or Lambeth. It’s unenforceable and adds to pollution.

“Is worse pollution now LiarDems policy? If you want to be a serious politician do some research.”

Cllr Cooke has since deleted the tweet.

A primary school in Charlton admitted it made an error after retweeting a tweet which blasted MPs.

The tweet the school shared said: "Tory MPs appear to be shamelessly enjoying the taxpayer funded benefits of guzzling 42,000 bottles of champagne and wine a year in parliament. Yet, in parliament, they have voted to take away the taxpayer-funded benefits that give all our children a free school meal."

A spokesman for the school later said: "The school made a retweet in error and has put procedures in place to ensure that this does not happen again."

Tory John Davey refused to comment when News Shopper asked about his tweet which compared the Mayor of London's London Plan to Nazi bombing.

The Crayford ward councillor tweeted that City Hall proposals would "cause the most damage to Bexley" since Hitler's day.

A Liberal Democrat candidate was labelled as "nasty" after suggesting a Bromley councillor would have "more time for her baby" after the local elections.

Nicola Dykes, who was the target of the tweet, told News Shopper she was "shocked and quite taken aback".

A spokesman from the Liberal Democrat party said the tweet was just an attempt at "political banter".

A Met Police spokesman said a tweet sent by Lewisham MPS was "erroneous" after they appeared to suggest mental health issues were getting in the way of fighting crime.

Lewisham MPS tweeted: "So busy dealing with the fallout from mental health issues and 'missing' people don't have time to fight crime."

This was later deleted and changed to: "Every call matters to us. Dealing with vulnerable missing people and attending calls related to mental health issues is a vital part of everyday policing."

A 24-year-old was reported to police after setting up a fake Twitter account pretending to be an MP for Greenwich and Dartford.

The Goldsmiths student brandished her fake politician as being the first socialist party MP elected to Westminster.

The office of Matthew Pennycook, MP for Greenwich and Woolwich, said “such a website could affect the real-life cases of local residents who need the urgent assistance of an MP”.

According to readers who voted in our poll, Bexley councillor Danny Hackett won a Twitter spat with pop star Lily Allen.

The singer posted criticism of former Labour leader Tony Blair before Hackett replied calling her irrelevant.

A series of tweets between the two unlikely enemies ensued before News Shopper readers suggested Hackett won the argument.

The youth crime commissioner for Kent was forced to resign just six days into her new job after old tweets were dug up.

Paris Brown, then 17, had her tweets investigated by Kent Police.

She said after her resignation: "I accept that I have made comments on social networking sites which have offended many people.

"I am really sorry for any offence caused. I strongly reiterate that I am not racist or homophobic."
