Bromley Bowling Club is celebrating a major milestone this year.

The club was formed on April 18, 1888 and is this year celebrating its 130th anniversary.

Former Prime Minister of Britain, Harold Macmillan, became a member of the bowling club in 1946.

Ron Cook has worked at the club, which is based on Plaistow Road, for 14 years.

He told News Shopper: “It is a place for people to come and enjoy indoor and outdoor sport, make new friends and refresh old friendships.

“It used to be an old school in the 19th century before becoming a meeting point. It has now developed into a social point and a sports club.

“We have snooker, darts and a bar within the clubhouse.”

He added that one of his greatest memories was when Bromley Bowling Club won the last ever Bowls England match held in Worthing to become national champions.

The home of British bowling has since been relocated to Leamington Spa.

The club is celebrating the anniversary by holding an open day on Sunday (June 10) as well as hosting matches made up of team of threes throughout the season.

Today there are 150 members (aged between 16 and 90) affiliated with Bromley Bowling Club.

In April 2012 – it became one of the first bowling clubs in the UK to introduce disabled toilets, parking and access to the green.

“We really welcome everybody,” Ron said. “We are a very open and friendly club."

The Mayor of Bromley is bringing a team to play the Bromley bowlers on July 31 – another mark of the 130th anniversary.
