The steam railway in Hampton has now got a solar powered ticket office.

Hampton & Kempton Waterworks Railway's new solar panels and electrics were installed by its ingenious volunteers, who maintain and develop it.

The much-needed work was funded through a grant from the Heathrow Community Fund.

Andy Kerswill, chairman of the fund, said: “It was a privilege to visit the railway and see what our forefather Engineers had created 100 years ago, still operational today and bringing so much pleasure to local communities.

"The Heathrow Community Fund Trustees are delighted to have been able to play a part in the railways's on-going development."

Hampton & Kempton Waterworks Railway is entirely voluntary run; the ambitious project plans to extend the track to Hampton to enhance the heritage railway for local communities.

Adjacent to Kempton Steam Museum, the industrial railway carried coal between 1915 and 1945 from the Thames at Hampton to the Kempton & Hampton water pumping stations.
