Passers-by in Greenwich experienced a chilling sight this morning outside the Old Royal Naval College, with three blocks of ice appearing to trap a group of historical explorers inside.

The three massive chunks of ice stood tall despite outside temperatures of more than 20C this morning in Greenwich.

But the frosty installation has been placed outside the college ahead of the UK premiere of AMC's new period horror and drama miniseries The Terror, which tells a fictional version of an a real expedition in 1845 to the Arctic.

The 10 part series, based on the Dan Simmons novel of the same name, tells a fictionalised account based on the real life stories of the ships HMS Terror and HMS Erebus which set off to find the fabled northwest passage.

To create the three ice blocks 2,500 litres of water were needed which took two weeks to freeze.

A hollowed out section allows the public to climb inside one of the blocks to experience what the conditions faced by the crew of Terror and Erebus may have felt.

Captain Francis Crozier, played by Jared Harris (The Crown, Mad Men), Commander James Fitzjames, played by Tobias Menzies (Game of Thrones, The Crown), and Captain John Franklin, played by Ciarán Hinds (Game of Thrones), lead their crews on the voyage destined for disaster.

Facing off against the harshest conditions, dwindling morale, and a supernatural horror, the crews of the ships desperately fight for survival in the ice and snow.

The real Erebus and Terror were discovered off the northern coast of Canada in 2014 and 2016.

The series is due to premiere on BT TV on April 24 as well as on BT's youtube channel www.youtube.com/bt and Sky channel 192.
