Commonwealth leaders were welcomed by Haringey schoolchildren on Wednesday at City Hall.

Children from three secondary schools in Haringey, Lewisham and Southwark met the Prime Ministers of Canada and New Zealand, Justin Trudeau and Jacinda Ardern.

The state leaders discussed gender equality and issues affecting young people, with the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan chairing the meeting.

Issues raised by the children included looking at making sure girls and boys get the same opportunities; tackling gender equality and the gender pay gap.

Addressing the children, Mr Trudeau said: “You are already the leaders of today and what you do today has a great impact.”

On the point of feminism, he stressed that men had to be part of the solution not just women.

Ms Ardern added: “We need to make sure that we keep working to improve things so that things will be better for that next generation than they are now.”

Following the meeting Sadiq Khan thanked both Prime Ministers and the young Londoners for ‘thought-provoking’ questions.

He added: “What a truly inspiring discussion.”

The event is part of the Mayor of London’s #BehindEveryGreatCity campaign, which celebrates 100 years since the first women secured the right to vote in the UK.
