A children’s club which runs before and after-school sessions at a Worcester Park primary school has been rated 'inadequate' in its latest inspection.

The report into Come and Play Childcare Ltd at Cheam Common Infants’ Academy, in Balmoral Road, was published by Ofsted on April 10.

But the school says it is investigating the concerns raised following the judgment and further information for both parents and carers will be provided ‘as soon as possible’.

Inspector Patricia Edwards said: “The provider [Come and Play Childcare Ltd] has failed to implement robust recruitment and vetting procedures in a timely fashion.

“This is a breach in the safeguarding requirement and means that the necessary procedures to ascertain the suitability of staff are not completed.

“Younger children are not assigned a key person to help them settle. This limits staff’s ability to develop links with parents to understand and meet children’s individual needs.”

Come and Play Childcare Ltd is a private company which leases premises from the school to deliver both before and after-school care provision for local parents, and it was inspected on March 15 before Ofsted published the report on its website.

The report has also listed strengths, which include children enjoying ‘regular fresh air and exercise’ while getting to play outdoors on a frequent basis.

Staff were praised for interacting with children as they play with an encouragement in ‘participation in enjoyment’.

Ms Edwards continued that children ‘develop independence in addressing their personal needs’ as a result, such as handwashing before eating and take on small responsibilities’ – which involves creating their own wraps and selecting their own fillings.

However, she also added: “Staff do not develop partnerships with the school to receive valuable support and advice, to enhance consistency in children’s care.

“Self-evaluation is not effective in improving the quality of the provision and does not consistently seek the views or opinions of parents to help involve them fully in the ongoing evaluation of the club.”

Sutton Guardian has approached Come and Play Childcare Ltd for comment.

A Cheam Common Infants’ Academy spokeswoman said: “It has come to our attention that an Ofsted report [dated March 15] has raised concerns relating to the childcare provision for children receiving wrap-around care delivered by Come and Play Childcare Ltd.

“Although the provision is separate to Cheam Common Infant Academy, we take any concern relating to childcare provision and safeguarding very seriously.

“The school is investigating the concerns raised and will provide further information to parents and carers as soon as possible.”
