Gas network SGN has warned commuters that its upcoming 12-week replacement works will affect traffic in the borough.

SGN is investing £969,000 to replace old gas mains and services with new plastic pipes in Southborough Road, with the work starting on Tuesday (April 3).

An SGN statement read: “We understand that people can get frustrated by roadworks. However, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years.

“This means that when the work is complete, people will continue to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.”

How will these works affect traffic?

The mini roundabout of Southborough Road, Oldfield Road and Southlands Road will be closed at the junction only until Sunday (April 15).

Traffic for Southborough Road will be diverted via Southborough Lane, Blackbrook Lane and Bickley Park Road A222 in both directions.

The 336 bus will not serve Southborough Road between Southlands Grove and Southborough Lane and will be diverted via Hawthorne Road, Blackbrook Lane and Southborough Lane in both directions.

Bus route R7 will not serve Oldfield Road, Southborough Road or Hawthorne Road, and will instead be diverted along Blackbrook Lane before continuing its normal route via Barfield Road in both directions.

Once this is finished – SGN will work along Southborough Road towards Waldegrave Road under temporary signals.

Temporary lights are expected to be used for 10 weeks.
