A woman who was “on fire” has died in Richmond.

A spokeswoman from the Met Police said: “Police were called at approximately 1.15pm on Monday, March 12 to reports of a woman on fire in the street in Queens Road, Richmond.

“Officers, London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade attended the scene.

“The woman was pronounced dead at the scene at 1.41pm.

“Enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing - at this early stage the death is being treated as unexplained.”

Guy Lloyd, who witnessed the incident, said: “I saw a person on the floor in flames and people putting the flames out as I went past.

“I thought it was a man to be honest- I didn’t know it was a woman- they were very badly burnt.

“Very sad.”

Another witness said it was “dreadful” and praised the emergency services for an “incredible response”.

Dr Karen Kendel-Smith said: “This is dreadful. I was in the queue of traffic just a couple of hundred yards away as all of the emergency vehicles came to the scene - it was clear it was a critical situation.

“An incredible response from the emergency services - I'm so sorry they couldn't save her.”

A staff member from Christ’s School and Sixth form centre confirmed the incident happened just outside the school but has no connection to it.
