Plans to redevelop an old industrial site in Raynes Park into nearly 100 homes and offices have been recommended for approval.

Merton Council's planning applications committee is due to decide on the scheme for the old factory site in Kingston Road on Thursday (February 22).

The plans, in two blocks of up to four and six storeys, include a mixture of 99 homes ranging from studio apartments to five-bedroom duplexes above commercial units.

They have come before the planning committee because of the high number of objections received and so councillors have the option of discussing conditions.

A total of 61 objections were received, including a templated letter from 55 addresses which included concerns about parking, traffic congestion, the design of the buildings and excessive density.

In recommending the plans for approval, planning officers wrote: "The application presents opportunities in the form of delivering employment opportunities, the delivery of much needed housing and affordable housing.

"The long since cleared site presents an opportunity for a well considered proposal. The scheme responds positively to the surrounding context in terms of massing, heights, layout, architectural cues and materials and is considered to make a positive contribution to the street scene."

The site has been the heart of several debates after previous applications for the Dundonald ward development were rejected.

Councillor David Dean said: “Dundonald ward councillors have been working with the property owner for four years as it’s really an important site.

“We are delighted that the property owner ran exhibitions previously and all the issues raised will be discussed at the planning committee on Thursday.”
