All council sport and leisure centres will be closed to start next month as they undergo a "major overhaul."

Greenwich Leisure Limited was awarded a new 20-year contract to run the facilities last year, and March 1 will be the first day that contract officially kicks in.

The centres will be shut so that GLL can rebrand the buildings and carry out "essential redecoration."

During the length of its contract, GLL is planning on brining "new state-of-the-art gym and group exercise equipment" to the gyms in South Norwood, Thornton Heath, Purley and Waddon, while also developing outdoor tennis hubs and outdoor activity programmes.

Councillor Timothy Godfrey was excited about the new partnership.

“I’m delighted that through this partnership we will deliver first class leisure facilities that residents deserve," he said.

"This will bring together a transformation of our leisure centres, combined with activity in 30 parks across Croydon and an exciting project at Ashburton Park and Hall.

“Working with an employee owned social enterprise that pays staff at least the London living wage is an important step in our council’s commitment to social justice."

Approximately 30 football pitches and tennis courts in Croydon parks are also included in the contract.
