West Wickham under water hockey players were awarded a bronze medal following an impressive performance at their first ever tournament.

Organised by the British Octopush Association, four players from West Wickham Underwater Hockey Juniors competed at the Junior UK Regional Championships representing team South East.

The under-12s competed in Newport to come third and win a bronze medal, a feat that was beyond their coach's expectations.

Head coach Jason Glass said: “What was most encouraging this year is that four of the team were playing in their first ever tournament - two from West Wickham - and it was fantastic to see how well they coped and certainly performed beyond our expectations.

"Winning bronze for a second consecutive year with our new players shows the continued development of the younger age groups within our club.”

Underwater hockey is played at the bottom of a pool by players using sticks to propel a 1.3kg puck through the water towards a goal.

As well as the under-12s achievements, one player from WWUHJ came sixth in the under-14s category.
