The daughter of a former Mayor of Bromley has paid tribute to her late mother who passed away last month.

Joan Wykes was a former member of the Royal Air Force and she died aged 94 on December 30.

One of her most notable achievements was being awarded an OBE in 1995 for her work with the National Rivers Authority.

She joined Bromley Council in 1973 for Chislehurst before becoming Mayor of Bromley in 2005.

Julie Speedie, Joan’s daughter, said: “My mother lived an amazingly rich and full life, and the details above are only the tip of the iceberg. She made an impact throughout Bromley including an involvement with Crystal Palace Park, which included everything from suggesting items for concerts to purchasing flamingos!

“She touched so many lives and had so many varied achievements across an extraordinarily wide range of areas, from traffic planning to historic buildings, from waste regulation to film censorship.”

Julie also spoke to News Shopper about some of her favourite memories she has shared with her daughter.

She said: “It was a marvellous experience growing up in a political household - I really appreciated all these insights into aspects of life one would otherwise have known nothing about, and I have many anecdotes about people and incidents I really treasure. There's so much to choose from.

"My mother was someone who always lived life to the full. She was a fabulous mother and passed on many of the passions of her life to myself, particularly a love of theatre, music, history, art, books, and travel."

Joan passed away peacefully in Bromley Park Care Home.

Her funeral will take place at Beckenham Crematorium on Thursday (February 8) at 2.15pm. A

An RAF Standard Bearer will be present.
