The Future Wood Green Business Improvement District’s £1.8 million proposal for a new-look town centre has support from the Haringey police force.

Haringey police have agreed to work with the Future Wood Green Steering Group on five important areas to improve safety and security.

These areas have been broadly headed physical security, volume crime, fraud and economic crime, business continuity and counter terrorism.

One potential project is a crime information website and app where businesses and police share knowledge about known criminals with each other.

Another is the introduction of Community Safety Accreditation Scheme certified on-street wardens who will collect details on business crime, while ensuring that businesses receive regular updates and co-ordinating with CCTV and the police.

Other proposed projects include the return of Pubwatch – in partnership with the police – to tackle anti-social behaviour in licensed premises, crime prevention workshops and training, and counter terrorism presentations.

Metropolitan Police Inspector Karl Rogers, said: “Haringey Police have been instrumental in the partnership planning for ‘Future WoodGreen’ since inception, which we believe will bring those long-awaited development changes needed to put Wood Green firmly back on the map again benefitting from security, environmental and economic growth experienced by other successful town centres across the capital.

“Hopefully our efforts will pay off when we go to ballot at the beginning of March 2018 when we call upon all Wood Green businesses to rally behind the campaign and vote YES for the tangible benefits Wood Green Business Improvement District will bring to them and the wider community.

“If successful we aim to go live in June 2018 and using a portion of the business levies generated Haringey Police will in partnership prioritise business policing concerns along the high street including strengthening physical security, tackling volume crime and preventing economic crime.

“Our new partnership with ‘Future Woodgreen’ will open up funding streams not quite seen before in our Haringey town centres and will offer new and improved ways of policing not routinely experiences before.

“We call on all businesses to vote YES to make a difference #FutureWoodgreen.”

A Business Improvement District is a designated area in which a levy is charged on all business rate payers, in addition to business rates.

The levy is used to develop projects that are beneficial to businesses in that area.

These may include extra safety and security, cleansing and environmental concerns.

Businesses subject to the levy vote in a ballot to decide whether the scheme goes ahead or not.

Voters will be posted their ballot papers on Monday January 29.

Voting will close on Thursday March 1 and results announced the day after on Friday 2.
