A man was commended after he acted as a human shield to protect and woman and her children from a knife-wielding man.

Jonny Dryer, a volunteer with the Community Security Trust, was given a commendation by the Metropolitan Police in Barnet for courage, bravery and public spirited actions for his work in helping shield people from a knife-wielding man.

On July 15, just after 11.15am, a large man, who was barefoot and bare-chested, was seen running in Brent Street, Hendon, with two knives in his hands, and began running towards a synagogue, where Mr Dryer had just completed a security tour,

Mr Dryer quickly helped as many people as possible get inside, but on seeing a woman and two children outside, he remained with them and acted as as a human shield to protect the family from harm, and used an empty buggy to create some distance.

He held off the man, who then ran back towards Brent Street, and then followed him towards an empty launderette on Bell Lane, where he was kept until the police arrived.

The man was detained under the Mental Health Act.

Superintendent Sara Leach, who presented to commendation, said: "I was involved in this incident and remember at the time being overwhelmed by the bravery and modesty of this individual.

"I feel honoured to read this citation."

Borough Commander Simon Rose added: "As this was probably the last Barnet borough commendation ceremony, before the likely Barnet, Brent and Harrow merger, we had our annual ceremony just up the road from Colindale police station at the RAF museum in their centenary year.

"There were many notable acts of bravery and lifesaving from members of the public and special constables to recognise this year too, so it was great to have such a wonderful venue."
