A Croydon MP has blasted Southern Rail after new statistics reveal which peak hour trains are the worst when it comes to being on time.

Southern ended its major dispute with ASLEF train drivers on November 8 last year.

This end to the strikes didn't seem to solve the problem of trains running on time though.

Over the following two months Southern did not experience a single strike action, yet Croydon commuters continued to experience widespread delays and cancellations.

Stats published by Croydon Central MP Sarah Jones show eight rush-hour Southern services through Croydon (pictured below) were late or cancelled at least 87 per cent of the time.

Ms Jones said big changes needed to happen in order to rectify the problem.

“These latest delay statistics and the National Audit Office report show that there are fundamental problems with this rail franchise," she said.

"It should be handed over to TfL as soon as possible, something a clear majority of Londoners want.

“The management contract handed to GTR means the Government pays them a guaranteed billion pounds per year and the state shoulders the risk of ticket revenues. This is the reverse of what we see on other rail networks across the UK.

“We were promised 3.5 billion pounds of profit from this huge franchise, but Southern’s abysmal performance meant that passenger journeys dropped last year, cutting ticket revenues and causing a loss to the public purse of over 90 million pounds.”

Over the two month period when the data was collected, two of the services, running from Victoria to East and West Croydon, were late every single working day. Those were the 5.46pm train to Littlehampton and the 5.37pm to Sutton.

On top of that, a Southern service through Croydon was also recently revealed as the "worst train journey in the country."

The 9.24am service from Caterham to London Victoria, calling at South Croydon and East Croydon stations was late 240 times in 2017.

A spokesperson for Govia Thameslink Railway, Southern's parent company, said: "Trains between Croydon and central London use the country's most congested rail network, where passenger numbers have doubled in just 12 years. Clapham Junction is the busiest rail junction in Europe, and Windmill Junction near Croydon itself is among Europe's busiest.

"The approach to Victoria has such little spare capacity that even a minor delay can escalate to cause severe, prolonged disruption across the network.

"The majority of delays are caused by incidents beyond our control, the most disruptive in the past two months being power, signal and track faults, and people on the line.

"We're modernising the service to address this domino effect with a completely new timetable in May to make routes self-contained and easier to operate.

"This will reduce the domino effect in times of disruption and result in a more reliable service."
