The Government has released the primary school league tables and a school in Mortlake has come out on top in Richmond.

St Mary Magdalen's Catholic Primary School had 100 per cent of pupils meet the expected standard, with a progress score ‘well above average’ in reading and writing.

The expected standard is based on a series of national curriculum tests at the end of Key Stage 2 which take place for mathematics, English reading and English grammar, punctuation and spelling.

A student's raw score is then scaled because despite tests being developed each year to the same specification, the questions are different and the difficulty of tests may vary.

Once a score is scaled it will fall somewhere between 80 (the lowest score) and 120 (the highest score).

Students scoring at least a scaled score of 100 will have met the expected standard of the test with a score of 99 or below meaning the student has not met the expected standard.

St Mary Magdalen's Catholic Primary School was followed by St Elizabeth’s Catholic Primary School where 93 per cent of students met the expected standard, followed closely by The Vineyard School at 92 per cent.

St Mary Magdalen's Catholic Primary School head teacher Helen Frostick said: “To be top of the league tables is wonderful and is a testament to all the hard work of the staff, children, parents and governors.

“We are a very hard working school on a constant mission to improve.

“In 2013, we were ratified as an outstanding school by Ofsted but we haven’t been complacent- we keep our foot on the gas at all times.

“As the head teacher I’m really excited for our community because we are taking in two reception classes in September 2018.”

This means the school will be offering 60 places, double the usual number.

Mrs Frostick added: “We want to add a heartfelt thank you to our deputy head teacher, Patricia Shields, who retired in the summer after 20 years of devoted service.

“She was in charge of that Year 6 and it’s such a fantastic legacy for her.”
