LOVE Your Clothes London, which promotes sustainable fashion, is hosting a free festive-themed workshop in Uxbridge next Wednesday (22).

The aim is to inspire people to up-cycle their clothes by showing how to create a unique Christmas jumper or customise party gear.

The workshop will show how to do simple repairs and alterations by a combination of hand and sewing machine.

It will be held from 6-9pm at Our Lady of Lourdes and St Michael, The Presbytery, Osborn Road.

New figures show that less than one in five people are confident enough to re-design an item of clothing, while only 15% feel confident to replace a pocket and 16% to replace a zip.

Yet customers are likely to spend in excess of £300m on Christmas jumpers over the festive period.

Ali Moore, from Love Your Clothes London, said: “An estimated £30bn worth of clothing gathers dust in our wardrobes every year because we don't wear it.

“Rather than buying new Christmas jumpers and party outfits, which may be worn only once and then thrown away, we’re encouraging Londoners to up-cycle last year’s Christmas jumpers.”

Extending the life of a piece of clothing by an extra nine months reduces the carbon, water and waste impacts of that garment by around 20-30%, according to recent research.

All people have to bring to the free workshops is a plain jumper or top from their wardrobe or local charity shop.
