A planning application has been submitted to convert the upstairs of one of Sutton's oldest stores into flats.

Furniture specialists Martell’s established a business in Sutton in 1930 before later moving the shop three units across to Sutton Common Road.

The family run company has operated from Sutton ever since.

They also run a shop in East Grinstead and are celebrating their centenary year since they first established.

Martell's of Sutton would not be affected if the development is approved.

Managing director of the company, Roger Martell, told Sutton Guardian: "There is surplus space upstairs not being used.

"There is a high demand for flats in the area. We had a new shop front fitted last year.

"Time flies when you are having fun."

A statement on the application reads: “The proposed change of use will provide much needed residential accommodation for Sutton.”

The potential new flats would be one bedroomed.
