(Parlophone) ****

AFTER two solid albums of grand, gothic glory, Interpol aren't about to fix something that isn't really broken. What they have done, though, is allow some lightness into their dark world. Real strings, a proper brass section and flashes of humour permeate the murk that tended to hold them back.

No I In Threesome is all lush textures and Paul Banks' exhortation to "try something new", while the album's first single, The Heinrich Maneuver is as catchy as bird flu. Blimey!

Pioneer to the Falls takes a slice of angular guitars and chunky rhythms, but the album's stand out is The Light House, a black-hearted torch song in which Banks drops his customary vocal detachment for unexpected warmth. Our Love To Admire is a very fine thing indeed.
