Under the concrete jungle of Lewisham and Deptford lies a surprising nature trail – so long as you are willing to get your wellies out to walk it.

The River Quaggy is a shallow stream running under the streets and has a lot more flowers and wildlife than you would expect.

Mike Acord went on the four and a half hour walk along the river with his family and he said even the odd discarded shopping trolley didn’t have too much of a negative impact on nature there.

He said: “You might see a shopping trolley but a shopping trolley is a great breeding ground for sticklebacks.”

Starting from Lewisham, he trudged along the river through Hither Green, Lee, Deptford, and finishing at Sutcliffe Park.

Contrary to what people might think, Mike said the river was incredibly clean and teeming with wildlife.

He said: “It’s quite shallow so it’s undulating a bit and its muddy but not dirty, it’s just mud and sediment.

“Our rivers are actually very clean, with lots of fish and birds and lot of kingfishers, especially by Deptford.

“It’s a really great way to seeing parts of our city unexplored and undisturbed in the concrete jungle that we live in.”
