MORE than 900 people in Hillingdon and the same number in Ealing were caught watching live TV or BBC iPlayer without a TV licence in the past year, new data from TV Licensing shows.

Enfield is the worst borough in London for evasion, closely followed by Croydon and Barking and Dagenham. Together, these three boroughs account for more than 20 per cent of all evaders caught in London in the last 12 months.

More than 28,000 evaders were caught across the 32 London boroughs in the 12 months from July 2016 to July 2017.

The lowest rates of evasion were found in Camden, City of Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea and Richmond, all of which had fewer than 300 evaders caught.

Across the UK, evasion remains low, at around six per cent, meaning around 94 per cent of homes and businesses across the UK are correctly licensed.

The data is being released as part of an effort to remind Londoners to pay for their TV licence.

A spokesman said: “A lot of Londoners live in access controlled addresses, such as buildings with a concierge or a private lobby. But that’s no reason to think we can’t visit them.

“We find the staff in the concierges or management companies to be of great assistance in arranging visits for our officers.”

A licence is required if you watch or record live TV on any channel. You also need one to watch or download BBC programmes on iPlayer.
