Witness Robert Andrew said the youths were at a party at the church hall and the incident turned into a "dangerous stand off".

He said: "Police created a walking wall in order to push youths away from the immediate area in the hopes that the congregation split and dispersed.

"The youths failed to do so and started to throw firework at each other and at times directed to fireworks towards to officers.

"The fracas ended up on the roundabout at Rose Hill and blocked complete traffic flow for a large number of minutes.

"Eventually around six police dogs were drafted in to disperse the crowds and around 1.30am the peace was restored to the area."

A spokesperson from Met Police said: "Officers attended the location and dealt with a group of youths, a number of whom threw fireworks.

"LAS attended as a precaution; however we are not aware of any member of the public injured.

"A police officer sustained a minor injury, but the officer did not require hospital treatment."

One man was arrested for a public order offence and he remains in custody at a south London police station.
