Six-time Paralympic champion David Weir and his coach Jenny Archer have had the Kingsmeadow Fitness and Athletics Centre in Kingston renamed in their honour.

Now to be known as the Weir Archer Athletics and Fitness Centre, the move was to recognise the work of the Weir Archer Academy.

Seven-time winner of the London Marathon Mr Weir said: “I’m honoured to have the centre re-named Weir Archer. I’m so proud of all that Jenny and I have achieved - the academy is in its fourth year and we couldn’t imagine having our academy anywhere else but at Kingsmeadow.”

The academy was set up in 2013 to support and train future wheelchair racing stars and provide a positive team environment for disabled athletes.

It provides coaching support and expertise at all levels at schools and clubs across the South East.

Ms Archer said: “Our academy wouldn’t be what it is today without our Weir Archer athletes, their families and our dedicated supporters. We’ve already broken a Guinness World Record this year and there’s more to come. Watch this space!”

In June, seven cyclists rode 150 miles in a day, from Kingston to the coast and back, and 25 wheelchair athletes from the Weir Archer Academy beat the 250-mile Guinness World Record for mileage completed on a racetrack in one day around the Kingsmeadow track.

This marked a £500,000 investment in the track by the council.

The wider site will continue to be called Kingsmeadow, with just the athletics and fitness centre changing its name.
