Councillors are pushing for better accessibility at London Underground stations as the city’s Mayor promises improvements in this area.

Harrow Council lent its support to Sadiq Khan’s plan to invest £200 million in improving step-free access at tube stations around London.

Cllr Krishna Suresh, of Rayners Lane ward, made the initial proposal to put pressure on the Mayor to ensure that Harrow-on-the-Hill and Rayners Lane stations benefit.

Step-free access is set to be provided at Harrow-on-the-Hill in 2019/20 but Cllr Suresh wants this to be extended to Rayners Lane.

“We want to enable even more Harrow residents and visitors to travel independently,” he said.

“These are two key stations that are used by a huge number of people each year, including elderly people and mothers with young children.

“It also extends to the surrounding areas like Roxeth, Roxbourne and Headstone and we, as a council, want to show that we care about all our residents.”

The council resolved to write to Mr Khan and to Transport Secretary Chris Grayling to pledge its support towards making Canons Park, Hatch End, Headstone Lane, Kenton, Northolt Park, North Harrow, Northwick Park, Queensbury, Rayners Land, South Harrow, Sudbury Hill and West Harrow stations accessible.

Cllr Suresh added that the next step was to build up “as much support as possible” to try and achieve this goal.
