The people of Lewisham have the lowest life satisfaction in London, and the second lowest in the country, latest figures revealed.

The data, released by the Office for National Statistics on Tuesday (September 26), right down the bottom of life satisfaction, with only Wolverhampton ranking lower.

When asked how satisfied they were with their life from a scale of 1-10, the residents of Lewisham on average were barely higher than a seven.

The average for the borough was 7.18 out of ten, while the UK average was 7.65.

Lewisham people also rank as one of the lowest boroughs when it comes to how they feel what they are doing in life is worthwhile.

The borough ranked in the bottom five in the entire country, and the worst in south London.

Councillor Pauline Morrison, Lewisham Councillor and chair of the safe stronger communities committee, said the results were “very disappointing”.

Speaking to News Shopper, she said: “Lewisham has gone through a period of massive change and we have had the historical poverty in Deptford and Downham which have now been taken over by developments.

“Clearly there is a change in population and jobs and some people maybe feel they are being left out.

“I’m very disappointed with the results and given the work we do, we obviously have a long way to go.”

Neighbouring borough Greenwich doesn’t fare much better, ranking in the bottom five in the country in life satisfaction, only slightly ahead of Hackney and Hertsmere.

The figures, which measure the data from March 2016 to 2017, show that across the UK the overall reported happiness and life satisfaction has showed a small increase in the UK.

In fact for Lewisham, life satisfaction has increased slightly on last year, where it ranked at 7.14 out of ten.
