A New Malden Tesco has cordoned off a third of its car park for a two week trial as speculation mounts it may be about to sell of land.
The Tesco Extra in Beverley Way will reopen the area on October 9.
One New Malden shopper said she was “horrified” when she arrived to get her groceries.
The woman, who does not want to be named, said: “I arrived at Tesco to find half of the carpark had been cordoned off.
“It’s unbelievable.
“I had difficulty finding a space and that was on a Monday. What about Christmas or other busy times?
“It will be absolute chaos.”
The shopper said she goes to the Tesco because there are plenty of spaces available.
When questioned by the Surrey Comet whether the redevelopment would involve a block of flats, a spokesperson for Tesco said “nothing has been decided”.
He said: “A small section of our New Malden store car park is temporarily closed and will reopen on Monday, October 9.
“In the meantime, the rest of our car park remains open and we are continuing to serve shoppers as normal.
“No decision has yet been made on any redevelopment on the car park of our New Malden site, but we will keep the local community updated if this changes.
“We have no plans to change the store.”
