Unfortunately named places to eat called Cummin Up and Star Café have the worst possible food hygiene score – and they are not the only ones in Lewisham.

Four eateries have been given zero stars for their hygiene standards in the past year, meaning urgent improvement is needed.

There are another 51 food outlets that inspectors have given just one star to, signifying that major improvement is required.

Restaurants, takeaways, shops and even school catering are among the businesses and organisations to have been rated poorly for their hygiene in places such as Lewisham town, Deptford, Lee, Forest Hill, Catford, New Cross, Sydenham and Hither Green around the borough.

The details have all been published on the government’s Food Standards Agency website.

The ratings have been given to businesses to reflect the standards of food hygiene found when they were inspected by food safety officers from Lewisham Council over the past few months.

Inspectors check the following three elements:

1. How hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored

2. The condition of the structure of the buildings – the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities

3. How the business manages what it does to make sure food is safe and so that the officer can be confident standards will be maintained in the future

However, we will update this page with any responses from the business owners explaining why they got a low score and what they’ve done to fix the problems.
