A petition has been launched calling on the council to reject a new Tesco being opened in Twickenham.

A planning application to convert 117 London Road into four flats and a shop was refused in 2015 on the grounds of size, overdevelopment, increase in traffic, and lack of parking and affordable housing.

An application for the same area, which has yet to be formally submitted but was confirmed by the agent dealing with it at Featherstone Leigh, includes proposals for a new Tesco.

Linda Birch, who started the petition, said the site on the corner of London Road and Whitton Road, was not suitable for a Tesco and would have “adverse effect on traffic and noise for local residential neighbours”.

She said: “Twickenham High Street has a high turnover of shops, and the dreaded ‘Twickenham Refurbishment’ sees many small independent shops constantly close down.

“Another Tesco is not required on the parade killing the few small independent shops that are already established at that end of the high street.”

She added there are “already five other Tescos within a short distance” of the proposed location.

Planning officers will notify the public when the planning application is received and will consult with other council departments and those with potential to be affected by the proposed changes.

Richmond Council will be in a position to comment on the petition, which currently has 79 signatures, when the application is submitted.
