Community heroes at a housing association have been recognised for their sterling efforts at a special awards ceremony.

Three workers at the Harrow Churches Housing Association (HCHA) were given ‘Star Awards’ by the Mayor of Harrow, Cllr Margaret Devine, for their “strong, positive” contribution to tenants’ and community life.

Mahesh Naran, member of the HCHA maintenance and adapt team, was nominated for his willingness to go “above and beyond the call of duty” and he expressed his gratitude to those who had put him forward.

Volunteer Tony Butler, who lives in Ewart House, was selected for his work in running a weekly film club. This, he explained, gives residents the chance to “socialise, chat and enjoy a good movie”.

And Kim Van Den Berghe, who hosts the weekly Wednesday bingo sessions for HCHA, said his voluntary work gives him the chance to give back to society, particularly to older people.

After receiving his award it was back to business as he called at the bingo numbers for the regular participants.

Cllr Devine said presenting the awards was a great honour since the housing association holds a special place in her heart.

Anyone who has made a difference to the HCHA community can be put up for an award and it is always on the lookout for suggestions.

Chris Holley, CEO of HCHA said: “We like to look at the work people do in HCHA and with our partners and volunteers, and there are people in the Harrow community who have done great things

“We want to recognise their involvement in helping to make our community a better place through the HCHA Community Star Awards.”
