An Orpington Parkrun has reportedly been cancelled after members of the traveller community camped out in the middle of the route.

Orpington Parkrun is a five-kilometre run that takes place every Saturday at 9am in Goddington Park, off Goddington Lane, Orpington.

The group posted a comment of Facebook yesterday (August 17) which said: "Saturday’s event is cancelled. The start straight, finish straight and pavilion are blocked by travellers. Other parkruns are available.”

Runners expressed their disappointment on the social media site.

Jacquie Allix said: "That's not good. Hope all cleared soon. Thanks for alert."

Suz-anne Barnes Kingdon said: "typical just when we were returning!"

It was reported that the travellers left Goddington Park at around lunch time today (August 18), but no further comments on the group's Facebook page or website have appeared to say the run is back on.

Parkrun is an international group and organises five kilometre runs across the world.

A number of Parkrun events are still taking place across London on Saturday. Hoblingwell Parkrun, Beckenham Place Parkrun, Bromley Parkrun are all nearby.

It is not the first time that travellers have pitched up in Goddington Park. In July 2015 the travellers were evicted by police.

Although some people were annoyed by the travellers for disrupting the run, a number of people jumped to their defence on social media.

A member of the Orpington Gossip Facebook page said: "I met some lovely traveller kids at Goddington park this morning.

"They made me laugh asking me lots of questions, they were very chatty and friendly.

"I taught them how to use my camera and they took some beautiful photos of my son. Thanks girls was good to meet you!"

Bromley Council was unable to comment at the time of publication.
