“Knife crime is an increasing problem in south London. There is no excuse to carry a knife and everyone has a responsibility to prevent this type of crime.

“If anyone knows someone in possession of a knife, please tell them to use the special bins that are in some boroughs.”

The councillor said friends from the high school were all "completely in shock" at the news, having recently enjoyed a night out with their friend at a club.

Mr Namanga is also believed to have played rugby at Old Ruts Rugby Club in Wimbledon. The club tweeted: “All of our thoughts are with Dan Namanga's family and friends. RIP.”

Friends also took to social media to pay tribute to the popular teen.

One user said: “Just goes to show how short life is and how nothing should be taken for granted. RIP Loni.”

Another wrote: “It just feels unreal to hear that Daniel Namanga has passed away. I just can't believe it, and the way he passed aswell is traumatising news.

“You hear about this on the radio or news alot of the time, but never have I heard about it being a friend from high school. Be blessed up in heaven daniel, rest easy.”

A murder investigation was launched after police were called to a disturbance in Old Kent Road, New Cross, on August 8 at around 2am.

Officers and London Ambulance Service attended and found Mr Namanga suffering from stab injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 2.50am.

Detectives believe the teenager was involved in a fight with a large group of people outside a nearby venue.
