A day spent being pampered from head to toe is a welcome treat for anyone but one that is always better shared. With this in mind, the Runnymede Hotel & Spa near Windsor has introduced an exclusive Mother & Daughter stress-buster day spa package, ideal for brides-to-be wanting some chill-out time with their mums before their big day, for exam-stressed teenage daughters as a reward from their proud mum, or simply as an excuse to spend some quality time together.

Sounds like a good idea so I took my mum along to the hotel's award-winning spa for a day of luxury, just the two of us.

We arrived, bubbling with excitement, to the spa reception, where we were given a quick tour of the facilities before slipping into the fluffy robes and slippers provided. The package includes lunch at the spa's Garden Room so we headed straight there to build up our energy levels for the long day of luxury ahead. The menu is refreshingly healthy - no greasy chips and pizza here - offering a selection of sandwiches (on a choice of malted wholemeal, multigrain or gluten free bread), paninis and wraps, as well as jacket potatoes, homemade soup and a self-service salad bar. I tucked into a delicious goats cheese, pimento and asparagus panini while mum had houmous, chargrilled vegetable and salad leaves in a tomato wrap. As a special treat, the package includes a glass of champagne each (or a non-alcoholic champagne for younger daughters) and fresh whole strawberries, champagne, cakes and pastries are available throughout the day to tuck into at your leisure.

Fully refreshed, to the pool area where we relaxed on the loungers and flicked through the glossy magazines provided. The facilities are extensive and include an 18m swimming pool, saunas, eucalyptus steam room, whirlpool bath, plunge pool and, for those with more energy, a recently refurbished gymnasium with Technogym equipment and dance studio offering a variety of classes. We, however, decided on the lazier option and whiled away a very pleasant afternoon alternating between dips in the pool and whirlpool bath and visits to the sauna, before heading to the treatment rooms for yet more pampering.

The spa has won the Guinot Crown Salon Award for three years in a row so we knew we were in for a treat. Guests can choose between either an aromatherapy facial with hot stone therapy incorporating a luxury scalp, hand and arm massage (1 hour 30) or a full body aromatherapy massage with hot stone therapy designed to ease tension while restoring balance and harmony (also 1 hour 30). We both decided on the latter and enjoyed a heavenly 90 minutes each having our aches and pains gently soothed away in the peaceful surroundings of the Aquitaine deluxe group treatment suite - a double treatment room perfect for mothers and daughters to share the experience.

We were so relaxed by the end, it took quite an effort to rouse ourselves but we managed to stumble back to the Garden Room where a restorative pot of tea and pastries awaited us to round the day off perfectly.

The package is priced at £95 per person and mothers and daughters are entitled to a 15 per cent discount on all products purchased on the day from ESPA, Guinot and Clarins. You also receive a Skin Care Survival Kit to take away with you, to continue the pampering back home.
