A supermarket in Twickenham has had its license revoked and the owner has been fined after he was caught employing an illegal immigrant who he allegedly paid just £3 an hour and made work a 48-hour week.

A Nepalese national, who had illegally been in the UK since 2010, was found working in Twickenham Supermarket in Richmond Road in May. An Immigration Enforcement Team visited the store in May 26 and detained the worker, who has since been deported.

The shop's owner Monu Singh Sachdeva has been fined £15,000 and the supermarket's licences was revoked following a meeting of Richmond Council's licensing sub-committee at York House on Tuesday (July 24).

The committee was told the illegal employee was working 48-hour weeks and earning just £3 an hour with no tax or national insurance contributions being paid

PC John McGann said: “Richmond Police in partnership with The Immigration Service will deal robustly with any licensed premises found to be exploiting illegal workers for their own financial gain”

Mr Singh Sachdeva has 21 days to appeal the decision following receipt of a decision notice.
