A scheme backed by Jude Law that will give free theatre tickets to Lewisham children has ten days left to raise £10,000.

A Theatre Trip for Every Child, Lewisham is run by the Albany theatre on Douglas Way and aims to offer a free theatre ticket to every five-year-old in the borough.

Last month the theatre launched an appeal online to fund the first 1,000 tickets which are priced at £10 each. So far they have made £6,805. The funding push will finish in ten days.

Jude Law, who grew up in Lewisham, said: “I am delighted to support this terrific initiative which has the potential to positively impact the lives of young children in Lewisham.

“It is crucial for the future of our communities that we find creative ways to nurture and support the next generation.

“Theatre has the power to inspire children and we must encourage them to follow their dreams, no matter how big.”

The Albany Theatre aims to give tickets to 4000 children.

At a launch for the Lewisham scheme last month, chief executive of the Albany, Gavin Barlow, said: “We are passionate about every child having the chance to enjoy high quality theatre in their local area.

“Early access to the arts contributes significantly to a child’s development, sparking their curiosity and giving them new perspectives on the world. We believe very child should have the opportunity to benefit from that experience.”
