Landowners say they have been left with a £100,000 bill after "tonnes" of rubbish was left after travellers moved on from a site in Bickley.

Three bathroom suites, fridges and building materials were among the waste left after the group moved on July 19.

The 20 co-owners of Thornet Wood say they are now facing a £100,000 fee to clear the fly-tipping.

Photos from the scene in Blackbrook Lane show piles of rubbish covering the area in Blackbrook Lane. Caravans had been parked nearby for two weeks, according to a spokesman for the owners.

They were served with an eviction notice on July 19 and were given 24 hours to leave the site.

A Thornet Wood spokesman said: "There is eight and a half acres of land in total, and it [the rubbish] covers about a quarter of that.

"We have had three contracters on site. We're going to have a meeting with all the co-owners, the environment agency are invited. We've got to get the funds together. The full quote was £90,000 plus VAT which will bring it to more than £100,000."

The site was locked but the owners have increased security following the incident.

The spokesman added: "We haven't got anything against the travelling community, everybody deserves somewhere to live, but we don't apprieciate fly-tipping or the impact on the environment."

Police in Bickley posted a photo of the "fly-tipping" on Twitter.

They said: "The travellers have moved on from the site on Blackbrook lane.

"Sadly they didn't take their rubbish with them."
