John McDonnell returns as Hayes and Harlington's MP, triumphing over the Conservative’s ‘nasty’ campaign.
John McDonnell (Labour) 31,796, Greg Smith (Conservative) 13,681, John Bowman (UKIP) 1,153, Bill Newton Dunn (Liberal Democrat) 601, Cliff Dixon (Green) 571.
Labour hold, majority 18,115 (+8,419)
Turnout: 74,875 65.41%
The shadow chancellor earlier accused the Tories of running a nasty campaign during an interview on Sky News, claiming Labour ran theirs on Jeremy Corbyn’s character.
Mr McDonnell said: “Labour is ready to form a government now.
“We take nothing for granted but if we have the opportunity to form one we will.
“We’ll put forward the policies of our manifesto which became so popular.
“It will means ending the cuts to our NHS, ending its privatisation, restoring the budget cuts to our schools so they’re properly funded and scrapping tuition fees for students.”
It is Mr McDonnell's sixth election victory out of seven, with a boost of 8,419 votes since 2015 to 31,796.
The 55-year-old won his seat in 1997 and the 65.41% turnout helped build on his majority of 10,824, taking it to 18,115.
