Theresa May's decision to call a snap election and secure a strong mandate for Brexit negotiations has backfired, with a hung parliament the result.

With just four constituencies remaining to be called, the Conservatives are forecast to take 319 seats - seven short of the 326 needed for an outright majority.

Labour has outperformed gloomy predictions to take 261 seats, while the party's leader Jeremy Corbyn led calls for Mrs May to resign.

The Prime Minister has resisted a growing chorus of calls for her to stand down, however, reportedly saying she has "no intention" of resigning.
