A landmark Croydon pub has reopened with a new identity after a £325,000 restoration.

The Goose in Surrey Street has been renamed Market Tavern and opened its doors late last month ahead of the £1.1million renovations to the 700-year-old Surrey Street market.

The transformed boozer – owned by Stonegate - is open from 8am to catch early market traders. It is pitching itself at the sports crowd with six HD TV screens as well as a big screen showing Sky and BT Sports. It even offers a Sports Table Service for big sporting events.

It also features a pool table and some Croydon-inspired décor.

New manager Nigel Gamble said: ““It may sound colloquial but the Market Tavern is a traditional, proper pub with an offer that today’s pub goer demands. Reverting back to the origins of pub names, we’re re-instilling the principles of a pub name being synonymous with its surroundings.”

He added: “No one is going to say it isn’t time!” said Nigel Gamble. “Surrey Street is being developed so it was only right we put our hands in our pockets to make sure we fitted the new landscape. It’s just great timing for everything to come together like this.”
