North Cheam vets found themselves in a sticky situation after the owner of more than 200 insects abandoned them on the practice’s doorstep.

Staff at Maven Vets, in London Road, discovered hundreds of stick insects just before they opened their doors last week.

The pets’ former owner admitted he could not stick with caring for the critters in a handwritten note attached to the cage.

It read: “I’m so sorry, but I’ve tried to rehome the stick insects without success. Please could you find a new home for them, as there are just too many and it’s not fair to them. Thank you.”

Since taking in the creepy crawlies the practice’s team has sought to rehome most of the animals.

Vet Michael Morrice said: “They are certainly an unusual pet for us to be presented with but we’re hopeful we can find good homes for them all.

“I’ve even taken a couple home myself much to the delight of my three children though I’m not sure my wife is 100 per cent thrilled.”

If you feel that you will be able to re-home the animals call Maven Vets on 020 8337 2214.
