Ofsted inspectors have given a Carshalton secondary a ‘good’ grade following a visit earlier this month.

Education officers praised Winchcombe Road’s Carshalton Boys Sports College and said the school’s leadership had ‘maintained the good quality of education’ since the last inspection in June 2013.

The academy also delivered a ‘good culture of ambition’ for teenagers and that parents ‘recognise the effort staff put in to getting the best out of pupils’ time’, according to Matt Tiplin – who authored the report.

He added: “The school and sixth form are increasingly popular choices for parents, with the number on roll increasing and the school continuing to be oversubscribed.

“Leaders have not been complacent about national reforms to GCSE and A levels, and have made suitable adjustments to the curriculum over that meet pupils’ needs.

“Enrichment, club and the sense of community that exists within the school featured prominently in parents’ and pupils’ feedback to instructors.”

But the report, published on Tuesday May 23, outlined recommendations the college should follow to gain an ‘outstanding’ rating.

It suggested ‘teachers effectively stretch the most able’ and ‘continue to improve outcomes for middle-ability disadvantaged children’.

Headteacher Simon Barber applauded pupils and their parents, calling both ‘amazing’.

He said: “We’re really pleased with the report, it has been a really big lift for us.

“I think the success behind this is down to our very good teachers our boys and their amazing parents.

“We do know, however, that every school can be better and what we want to do is entwine our policy with pedagogy and deliver a more rounded education for our boys. We were only a bit away from getting an ‘outstanding’ so that should help us in that respect.”
