Whitehorse Road was closed after a suspicious item was seen outside Tesco Express.
Officers cordoned off the street after they were called at 3.21pm today (Thursday, May 25).
The cordon was still in place at about 4.44pm, but has since been lifted.
An eyewitness told the Croydon Guardian about the moment he was told about the bomb scare.
He said: “I was stuck in traffic and asked what was going on and someone told me it was because there had been a bomb scare at Tesco Express.
“When I got to Whitehorse Road I saw police had sealed it off with tape, they were not letting anyone through.”
A Metropolitan Police spokesman later confirmed that no arrests have been made.
