Rapid staff turnover and four different head teachers in two years has resulted in a Bexleyheath school being rated inadequate by Ofsted.

Brampton Primary Academy in Bexleyheath received the damning Ofsted report due to a number of issues, with most of them stemming from their staffing problems.

On top of the four different headteachers since 2015, half of the teaching staff were new to the post in 2017.

Even the board of governors has had high turnover rates, with half of the current batch being new to the post in 2016, including the chair of governors.

The new headteacher is aware of the substantial challenges facing the school and is determined to improve it, according to the report.

However it also stated that the school was often looking for “quick-fix solutions that cannot be sustained and lead inevitably to more change.”

The report, conducted from March 21 to 22, also states that many parents feel let down by the school and “leaders do not communicate effectively with them”.

Children’s education at the school is suffering as a result, with the report saying many classes have experienced a series of different teachers this academic year alone.

The report says: “Pupils report that it takes time for each teacher to assess their ability and get to know their needs individually.

“They are upset when they have to go through this process repeatedly and it uses up valuable learning time.”

In a letter to parents, the Academy school apologised for the poor report and said that they “feel this is a fair judgement.”

The letter, signed by Cathie Paine, Deputy Chief Executive, and Tim Culpin Deputy Director for Education, said: “Although we are disappointed by the overall judgement, we recognise there have been real challenges at Brampton Primary Academy.

“I want to reassure you that we have a clear plan of action to transform Brampton from where we are now, to an outstanding school that delivers the education that children and the local community deserve.

“Additional leadership support has been provided, and we have also begun to strengthen the Local Governing Body with additional governance and education experts.

“We have absolute confidence in the exceptional leadership that Gemma Clark has provided since being in post, and we are delighted to have also appointed a new Deputy Head -Ms Winter-Nolan.

“We believe that we now have a stable team, with the majority of staff staying with us into the new academic year.

“Reviews into how additional pupil premium funding is being spent, and improvements in the quality of teaching are also under way.

“We also now have a parent forum in place, which will help strengthen further communication with parents.

“I understand that this will be an anxious time for you. To alleviate any concerns and questions you may have, we would like to hold a meeting for all Parents/Carers on Monday 5th June at 7pm and share with you our plans to move the school out of this category.”
