The Metropolitan Police has increased the number of officers on the streets and are reviewing event policing plans after last night's terror attack in Manchester.

Specialist officers are also reviewing all plans for events coming up in London, where operations were already planned to the backdrop of a sever threat level from terrorism, which includes smaller events which may not have had police presence, and increased armed and unarmed officers.

The police are reaching out to event organisers to ensure that they are given the latest protective security advice, while a full review of the operations for the weekend's sporting events - the culmination of the football and rugby seasons at Wembley and Twickenham - is underway, including the deployment of extra armed officers.

Commander Jane Connors, said: "As the full horror of last night's attack in Manchester still sinks in the thoughts of all of us in the Met Police are with those who have lost loved ones or who were injured.

"Here in London we are determined to do all we can to protect the Capital. That means that over the coming days as you go to a music venue, go shopping, travel to work or head off to the fantastic sporting events you will see more officers - including armed officers."

The police also said that Operation Hercules, which deploys armed officers, will be stepped up to make the area "as hostile an environment as possible for any would-be attacker", with the team's tactics changing to avoid prediction.

Commander Connors also made a plea with Londoners to remain alert and contact them if you see anything suspicious.
