When “true gentleman” Shane Holland died of a sudden heart attack age 25, family and friends were shocked because he seemed completely healthy.

Yet while they search for answers, they have managed to channel their sorrow into potentially saving students from a similar fate.

Shane, who lived in Slade Green with his granddad, played football regularly and didn’t seem like the kind of man who could ever suffer from heart problems.

Daniel Medlen, Shane’s friend, said: “He was extremely fit and healthy, and went to the gym four or five times a week.

“Shane had a lot of time for friends and family and was always willing to help others.

“He had so much to look forward to, including our holiday to Cancun which he’d arranged.”

Yet on December 21, 2016, after complaining of some small symptoms, he suffered a heart attack on his way to work.

Stevie Standing, Shane's girlfriend, said: "Shane wasn’t just my boyfriend, he was my best friend and my future. We had so many plans together."

"He was such a loving person, a true gentleman and an all-round Amazing person who deserved the best."

Tests are still being carried out to determine the cause, but family and friends are determined to make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone else in their area.

They are raising money to pay for heart screenings for students at Erith School, where Shane was a former pupil.

A charity football match will be played in his memory at Phoenix sports club in Barnehurst on May 6 and the organisers are looking to raise £5,000.

The funds will be used to pay for doctors, technicians, screening equipment, and cardiologist reviews, and the screening will be carried out by Cardiac Risk in the Young.

The funds will be enough to offer free screenings to 30 per cent of a year group, on a first come, first serve basis.

Daniel said: “The message from our initiative is simple - by coming together on May 6th we can unite and really make a difference, to create something positive in Shane's memory and potentially save other young lives in our community.”

Gates open at 3pm and the match will kick off at 4pm, and the evening event will begin at 6pm. Tickets are £5 per person and the event includes a barbeque, bouncy castle, face painting and DJ.
