Sir Elton John has thanked fans for their support as he recovers at home after spending two days in intensive care.

John was struck by a bacterial infection during a flight to the UK from Chile.

His illness forced him to cancel the entire run of his show The Million Dollar Piano at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas from April to May.

The iconic singer, who owned Watford FC in the 80s, received treatment when he returned home and is expected to make a full recovery.

The Pinner-born star plans on resuming his performance schedule with a show at Twickenham on June 3.

As the 70-year-old rests at home, with husband David Furnish giving some insight into their family life with sons Zachary and Elijah, he found a moment to hop on Twitter and share an update with his followers.

Elton tweeted: "Woke up to an avalanche of well wishes. Thanks to everyone for reaching out.

"I’m resting well and looking forward to getting back on tour."

His management team released a statement on Monday night saying the infection was ‘unusual’ and ‘potentially deadly’.

Elton added: "I am so fortunate to have the most incredible and loyal fans and apologise for disappointing them. I am extremely grateful to the medical team for their excellence in looking after me so well."

His friend Janet Street Porter said she had got in touch with the singer to find out how he was doing.

She said on Loose Women: "He’ll hate lying in bed, he hates getting ill. It drives him mad. He’d rather play and be on stage than be ill."

She added: "I really want him to get well, he’s the same age as me."
