Work will get under way this week to significantly change the face of Thornton Heath as part of ‘Croydon’s regeneration story’.

Croydon Council’s £2.78m improvement work will initially focus on Brigstock Road, before moving on to Whitehorse roundabout, Trumble Gardens then Quadrant Road, outside the library.

Work to the area includes removal of old street furniture, and the installation of new kerbs, paving, trees and seats as well as improvements to buildings and shops along the High Street.

Improvements will filter onto Thornton Heath high street, changing the building and shops and creating a new wayfinder.

The work follows after a consultation was held with residents. Parking bays and bus stops close to the works will be temporarily suspended while it is carried out.

Work is expected to continue until autumn.

Croydon Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for homes, regeneration and planning, Alison Butler, said: “Croydon’s regeneration story is about the whole borough, not just the town centre and these improvement works will breathe new life into Thornton Heath.

“We are really pleased that residents and local businesses have been involved in the final outcome of these works. The improved public realm works will enhance Thornton Heath’s character, making it a more attractive place in which to live, visit, work and socialise.”
