One of Kingston’s most successful football clubs will play their last league game this weekend, after deciding to call it a day at the end of the season.

Kingston Albion FC was formed in 1978 from the Kingston YMCA club and play on the Fairfield, but was asked to leave its base at the Albion pub in Fairfield Road.

The pub decided to repurpose their outbuilding, which they had allowed the team to use as a dressing room since 1979, and the dressing rooms on the Fairfield have no appropriate storage facilities.

Declining numbers of players and willing helpers, as well as increased costs, also contributed to the decision.

The match away to Old Wimbledonians will kick off at 2pm tomorrow (Saturday, April 22), and Albion will be looking to avenge the 1-2 home defeat they suffered in their corresponding home fixture in September.

Last season the team won the Kingston and District Football League Premier Division, and there is the prospect of one last piece of silverware when they face Petersham Pumas in the League Senior Cup final on Thursday, April 27, at Molesey Football Club.

Current manager Grahame Puckett joined in 1988 as a player, becoming manager when he retired, and veteran Andy Holmden took over the secretary position as a 20-year-old in 1968 and has given 49 years of service, including a spell as player-manager.

In its nearly 40-year history the club has won the KDFL Premier League 6 times and the Teck & League Senior Cups a total of 10 times .
