Drivers who get their hands on the new 12-sided pound might be in for a nasty surprise if they try to park in Lewisham.

That is because the new-fangled coin won’t be accepted by their on-street and pay and display machines.

The old machines haven’t been updated to accept the new coins yet and Lewisham council don’t have a date on when they will be upgraded.

The old pound coins will continue to be accepted though until it is officially withdrawn from circulation on October 15, 2017.

A spokesperson from Lewisham council said: “We are currently unable to accept the new pound coin in our Pay and Display machines and are awaiting a date for the upgrades.

“When the upgrades have taken place both coins will be accepted until the old coin is withdrawn on 15 October 2017.

“Until the upgrades have taken place we encourage customers to use our cashless alternative RingGo or use the existing £1 coin.

“We apologise for any inconvenience and we will keep you updated via the Council website.”
