An emaciated dead dog was found dumped in a park in Downham.

A woman found the body of the black terrier type in Downham Playing Fields at Shaftesbury Park Recreation Ground, off Valeswood Road, on Tuesday afternoon.

The dog’s body was discovered dumped in an open area of the park. The woman took the dog to a nearby vets who alerted the RSPCA.

Inspector Anthony Pulfer, investigating, said: “The little terrier was in a terrible condition with an awful skin condition.

“He was very emaciated and had signs of conjunctivitis such as discharge coming from the eyes.

“The little crossbreed also had very overgrown claws so it looks like he had been neglected before his eventual death.

“It’s not clear at this stage how this poor little dog has died but it must have been very upsetting for anyone who saw the dog’s body dumped at the park.

“I’m also concerned about the circumstances surrounding the dog’s death and would like to hear from anyone who may recognise him or know where he has come from.

“Anyone who can assist with our investigation can get in touch by calling our appeal line on 0300 123 8018.”

The small, black dog - thought to be aged between seven and 10 - was not microchipped and had no identification tag.
